So... shouldn't Celestia be a queen?

My friend who introduced me to MLP:FiM brought this up, and it intrigued me.

As a ruling monarch, Celestia should be queen, not princess. Her being referred to as "princess" implies that another regent (possibly one of her parents, I thought, before watching Season 2 episodes 1+2 and learning about Discord) is the actual ruler.

I'm fine with Luna being called a princess, being the younger the sister and not (as I've understood it?) actually supreme ruler, but Celestia should be a queen. Maybe it's for aesthetic reasons, "Princess Celestia" might just sound better? Or maybe it has something to do with the old MLP canon, which I'm unfamiliar with?

That's actually a really good point that I myself have thought of once or twice. As far as I know Celestia and Luna don't have parents. Maybe, just maybe, we will get to see if they have parents or not in a later episode, but that is very unlikely. If I had to guess why she isn't called Queen Celestia it's because Princess sounds better.

Considering the show is aimed at little girls, princesses are more popular.

Lauren Faust intended her to be queen and when she presented it to Hasbro, they asked it if she could be a princess instead for the reasons Carrot Top mentioned and Lauren Faust was like, okay.

Actually if Equestria is technically a principality (a country with a ruling monarch with the title prince or princess, not a king Or queen) then it is correct

As for the aesthetic view, I agree "princess Celestia" sounds better than queen. I do wonder how old she is supposed to be compared to the ponies. How long ago was Discord defeated, again? Nightmare Moon was trapped for a thousand years, so Celestia and Luna are quite ancient to say the least.

I find it quite controversial that Celestia banished her own sister for that long, if no one minds me bring that up that subject that's probably already been said over a hundred times.

I just thought.... Discord? Do you have some sort of subconscious attraction to characters who have been banished/trapped in an object? Discord>Stone & Luna>moon
